Coffee and Women in Papua New Guinea

Coffee is an important cash crop in Papua New Guinea but the industry is male dominated and for women working in the sector there are many challenges. SA COUNTRY WOMAN magazine interviewed Matilda Rondy Hamago, about the challenges and issues facing women in PNG today. The article can be read here.

Matilda is the Senior Socio-Economist with the Coffee Industry Corporation Limited (CIC) and a collaborating researcher with the Pacific Livelihoods Research Group. Projects she has worked on include, ASEM/2016/100, ASEM/2008/036 and ASEM/2014/054. Matilda received a John Allwright Scholarship (ACIAR) and completed her Master of Philosophy at Curtin University in 2019. Her research investigated the role and impact of female extension officers on the participation of women in export crop production in Papua New Guinea. Matilda also published a chapter of her thesis in 2021 as a report titled Experiences of Female Agricultural Officers in Papua New Guinea – A Study of the Coffee, Cocoa and Oil Palm Sectors.
